Website Optimisation
Over 80% of all websites are found via Search Engines.
It is therefore critical that great attention is paid to
getting a website to rank highly on the search engines
in order for people to be able to find you.
It is simply not good enough to build a website and hope
that it will achieve this – it does not happen!
Optimisation has to occur.
Search engines do not care what
your website looks like and do not
rank you on that, they can only read
the text and that is what
optimisation is all about.
A search engine sends out "bots" or
"spiders" (small computer programs
that read the text on your website).
People use keywords or keyword
phrases in the search engines to
find information.
Optimisation is when you provide sufficient information to the search engines around a set of keywords or keyword phrases that they will rank you highly for these words.
Search Engine Target Marketing
Target marketing is when you
study, research and select keywords
that you expect people to use when
looking for your website. As an
example if you had a website that
sold contact lenses you would study
the keywords around this and
possible expand the research to
optics and spectacles as well.
Keywords are the words and
phrases that potential customers
type into the search engines when
they are looking for products and
services.
The best keywords are those that
potential customers type in a lot
when they are searching but that
competitors don't use.
Researching keywords
There are at least, two places
on the Internet that provide keyword
research. They report on keywords
that people have used in the past to
find similar websites.
The supposition is that if you use
keywords that apply to your website
that people have used many times in
the past then the likelihood is that
people will continue to use these
keyword phrases. In addition the
more a keyword phrase is used then
the larger your number of visitors
could be.
This information is analysed against
the competitive websites. If the
competitive environment is too
large, as in the case of words that
are more generic like "jobs" the
positioning of your website would be
better if it was placed against a
smaller more specific niche like
"computer jobs" or "secretarial
jobs" etc. |
